But, when je enter "one afternoon", Google translate writes it as: "UNE après-midi", which sound much meilleur to moi than "UN après-midi." Actually both forms are acceptable. Up until around 1920, auto feminine form was more prevalent in concertotable.com literature, cible since then the masculine type has take away over et is preferred de the académie française.

"après-midi" is definitely masculine, for this reason "un après-midi". Je checked Google translator and you are correctement in that ce translates "one afternoon" ont "une après-midi". Cible when amie keep typing et ask ce to translate "one afternoon in May", ce will quickly contrer back to "un après-midi en mai".
